Fadeelah's First Comrades

Posted by Rogeema Kenny on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, In : Running

During the latter part of last year, my sister Fadeelah made the commitment to do what is known as the Ultimate Human Race, the Comrades 88km ultramarathon. The run takes place between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg, and it changes direction every year. This year was to be an UP run, starting in Durban and ending in Pietermaritzburg.

When she told me of her plans, it was an absolute no-brainer that I would also go to Durban, not to run it but to support and second* her on the race....

OMTOM

Posted by Rogeema Kenny on Friday, April 3, 2015, In : Running

I had a list of super scary goals at the start of the year.
Believe it or not, running a 56.6km race was not one of them. Yet here I am, on the eve of my first ultramarathon, feeling nervous, excited, and most of all extremely blessed and grateful at the prospect of lining up at that start line tomorrow. I will save the part of when and why I decided to do it for the post-race report ;)

It was back in late-2009 that Fadeelah and I started training for our first 5km (yes, we trained for it, qui...

Knysna - The race that crept into my soul, then broke my heart...

Posted by Rogeema Kenny on Monday, July 9, 2012, In : Running

The Knysna Forest Marathon 21km will always have a very special place in my heart. It's one of my most favourite races on the calendar, yet it hasn't always been kind to me.

It was in 2010 when we first went up to Knysna to do the race. It was only the 2nd half marathon that my sister, Fadeelah, and I had ever done. We were SO excited, as the reputation of the Knysna Oyster Festival and all its festivities preceded itself. It was an amazing weekend spent with my siblings and friends.

Upon bein...

The Runner's High

Posted by Rogeema Kenny on Friday, March 2, 2012, In : Running

Many non-runners have asked me about the so-called runner's high and what it's all about. They simply cannot understand why runners are so passionate about running, what causes it and why it's not seen in other sports.

The Runner's World Daily Kick in the Butt that I receive daily in my inbox had the following quote earlier this week from Sasha Azevedo. I think it sums it up very nicely.

I believe in the runner's high, and I believe that those who are passionate about running are the ones w...

Thank you...and you...and YOU!

On Sunday, 8 January 2012, I will run the Bay to Bay 30km race. It is a breathtaking route from Camps Bay to Hout Bay, and back to Camps Bay, with 60% of the route having a view of the stunning Atlantic Ocean.

It will be my first 30km race, and also the longest I have done thus far.
Besides being beautiful, the race is also very tough. The route map and profile is shown below:

The reason for this post is to say thank you to everyone who has been there for me throug...

135 Minutes for Brony...

Posted by Rogeema Kenny on Sunday, October 30, 2011, In : Running

 On 12 November 2011, I will run a sub 2h15 half marathon.

There...I said it.

Who is Brony and why is her name in the heading? I will get to that soon enough. Right now I will first give the background to the plan for 12 November.

I am a runner. Although not too long ago I could literally not run 2km, the bug bit me when I went to spectate and second for a friend at the 2010 Two Oceans ultra-marathon. I will not rehash that story now, but you can read about it here.

Right now I would like to intr...

The Slave Run

Posted by Rogeema Kenny on Monday, August 8, 2011, In : Running

It was a clear, crisp, Sunday morning. I needed a long run. I didn’t have anyone to run with. But that was okay…because I’ve decided to take my Blackberry along, and when I #tweetmyrun I’m never really alone. I have my Twitter friends with me, even though some of them might be cosy in their beds on the other side of the country.

This would be a very special run, because I would do the route that I’ve worked very hard on for my club’s race in June, but never had the opportunity to r...

I Am Runner...

Posted by Rogeema on Sunday, April 11, 2010, In : Running

ROAD RUNNING... it is my newfound passion and source of inspiration... and a true testament to the amazing machine that is the human body!

Being a bit of a fitness junkie, I have always had a very intense love of gym and sport in general. But the one piece of equipment that was never my friend was the treadmill. I hated running. The treadmill was something I used when I needed to warm up and didn't feel like using any of the other cardio equipment, and I never stayed on it longer than 5 minute...
