Ironman African Championship 2023 – Race Report

This past Sunday I finished Ironman African Championship. It was supposed to be a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle, and 42km run. Instead, it ended up being a 800m swim, 180km cycle, and 42km run. As we were on the beach…

I will be racing at the Ironman African Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay on 5 March 2023. A 3.8km swim, 180km bike, and 42km run. I haven’t really been screaming it from the rooftops. I haven’t said it explicitly on…

    Ironman 70.3 Dubai 2022 – Race Report

It’s been just under a month since I’ve raced Ironman 70.3 in Dubai on 5 March 2022, and I think I’ve recovered enough to be able to write a fairly objective race report. The race was a roller coaster of…

These emergency lamps have been a game changer for These emergency lamps have been a game changer for lighting during loadshedding. Been using them for a few months now and it's fantastic. It's imported from the UK, so it's double the price of the cheaper local ones (you can find it on Takealot, and it's on special now) but it does the job much better and doesn't flicker when it gets old. So you end up buying less because look at that lifetime hours spec! Also lasts the entire 4hrs during the long loadshedding blocks, albeit slightly dimmer after 2 hours.

They're guaranteed as well, so if it fails you just send it back and they give you a new one. I haven't tested this but read on some reviews that people had no issues with returns.

Not sponsored at all, and I have no affiliation to them. Just thought I'd share because us Saffers are going through the most right now and we could all do with some help to get through it πŸ˜„

Wishing you an awesome day and a fantastic year! I make duah that you always be protected, that you be granted the best that life has to offer, and that our adventures never stop, even if they have to change form over the years 😊

SWIM, BIKE, RUN... but supersize it! It took me SWIM, BIKE, RUN... but supersize it!

It took me almost 24hrs after I finished Ironman on Sunday to realise the full magnitude of what I had actually done. Don't get me wrong...doing it and finishing it was always going to be a big deal for me, especially after being at my lowest point in 2 decades both physically and mentally only 7-8 months ago. At the time, even just running a half marathon seemed like something I might never be able to do again. Training for Ironman was part of my healing, and finding myself again.

What I didn't realise, was what a bulletproof zone I was in for the whole of Sunday.

Read all about it in the linktr.ee in bio. I go through what went down in terms of race conditions, how I engineered a finish time down to the minute, why I spent 25min in T2, why I took so long to do those last 3km of the marathon, and much, much more.

THE BLING 🀩 I most definitely had the most fun THE BLING 🀩

I most definitely had the most fun out of anyone out on that course today.

Absolutely loved the Ironman. The weather threw us some curveballs, but I made the most of it and decided that second to making the cutoffs, having fun would be the most important thing to do today.

Shortened swim due to lightning present, four seasons on the bike leg - loved it despite the weather and grateful that there was no gale force winds, and then the most enjoyable marathon I have ever run - despite my sore feet from being wet the whole day πŸ˜„, and hectic winds and lots of rain on the marathon too.

More on the day once I get some rest and can gather my thoughts, but thank you thank you for all the amazing support - both online and in person!

Well here we are, tomorrow is IRONMAN RACE DAY πŸ₯³

We will swim 3.8km, bike 180km, and run 42.2km...all with the goal of hearing the words "YOU ARE AN IRONMAN" on the finish line red carpet when I finish that night.

As always for a race of this magnitude, it's been one hell of a journey to get there. It's the second time I'm toeing the start line of this very special race, but the journey has been very different. Not better or worse, but different (I might go into that another time). But thank you to each and everyone that has been a part of it in ANY capacity.

I've seen to everything that is under my control to make the day a success. Some things are never under our control, and for those we have faith that it will work out and that we have the strength to endure whatever it is.

How to track me:
- Download the "Ironman Track" app.
- Choose "2023 ISUZU IRONMAN African Championship South Africa" (this step is NB)
- Search for my name - Rogeema
The app will alert you every time I pass a timing mat on the course and give estimated positions between timings.

Top tip: It's a looonnngg day, so if you plan to track me until the end, please take a nap at some point during the day, preferably during my cycle leg πŸ˜„

Swimming in sunshiiiiinnee. Swimming in sunshine. Swimming in sunshiiiiinnee. Swimming in sunshine. So good to be alive!

Just got back from an epic weekend at @bluelagoontriathlon. The swim during the tri yesterday and the standalone swim today were my absolute favourite parts.

Things I think about when swimming my super long swims of 3-4km... "There was a time, not that long ago, that I couldn't even run this far!"

Thinking of when I started running and me and @fadeelahk built up to running 5km, starting from struggling with 2km training runs. And when I started training for triathlon and couldn't even swim 20m in a pool. Now I'm SWIMMING 4km in the sea at a decent pace and feeling absolutely fresh after it. I will always be grateful for the journeys and don't take what I have now for granted.

None of this stuff comes easy or naturally to me, I have to work my butt off to progress, but the work and the struggles are all so absolutely worth it. You've gotta put in the boring grinds, lots and lots of it, and then one day... VOILA...you get a step change in performance seemingly from nowhere.

Don't ever think that you are too old, too slow, too big, too (insert reason here) to start something that speaks to you. If it stirs something in your being, start somewhere, and do it. There are always people willing to help you.

Thanks to @capescotty for your constant support in my swimming journey. Your guidance has been invaluable. And thanks to @sailfish_south_africa for making the most incredible wetsuits. It's a dream to swim in.

We couldn't get a pic without @paulingpen in it but I don't even mind having him in because he's a flippin rockstar! I don't even know how the man is still standing at this point. The entire weekend since Friday he was constantly either sorting out issues, announcing an event, MC'ing a start line or finish line, or hosting a prize-giving! Must be the many years of tri-ing giving him all that stamina πŸ˜„

28th January 2018 I was up super early this morni 28th January 2018

I was up super early this morning, to start riding before sunrise and to test breakfast 2hrs before exercising. All morning I was pondering on today's date...28th January. In my subconscience I knew it had some significance, but couldn't place it. Then it hit me...it has been 5 years since I did my first Ironman 70.3, in Buffalo City, on this date in 2018. What a journey it has been since then!

This race had so much significance to me. It had been such a journey to get there...from not being able to swim at all and having to learn to ride a bike again, to finishing a half Ironman with the 2nd hardest bike course in the world. I cried like a baby at the finish line (PS. I didn't even shed tears after full Ironman). None of that would even have been possible if I didn't see ordinary people around me at @atcmultisport and @embarktri smash goals like these. Surround yourself with people who make you believe that you are capable of more than you think!

While that race stood alone in what it meant to me, and was not intended to be a stepping stone to anything else... I knew back then that I wanted to be an Ironman, and set to work to reach that goal 15 months later. (To clarify to the non-triathletes who may be confused...you are only an Ironman after completing a full Ironman, not a 70.3) Once again, what a journey it has been!

You never forget your 1st!

Let's do epic shit... Out of the 3 fitness tests Let's do epic shit...

Out of the 3 fitness tests I had to do this week to establish baseline (swim, bike, run) metrics for my new programme, I was most nervous about the running one. I have been struggling with running fitness for quite a long time now.

And then on top of it, I end up doing the test when the temperature was over 30 degrees in the middle of the day. Thank goodness for the bit of wind πŸ˜„

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised at what my legs, lungs, and heart managed to produce in a 30-min threshold pace run. When my watch clocked 6:08 for the 1st km I was almost sure it would drop off a cliff later in the run, or even SOONER rather than later πŸ˜…. Km 3 was a mega rough patch, but I recovered and ended up averaging 6:07 for the 30 minutes, including a few walk breaks. I still have some speed left in me it seems. I know that's not fast for some, but it is for me.

I'm a little less terrified now of what lies ahead over the next 4 months.

Oh and I'm in love with my new pink 1000ml bottle to assist with my daily hydration needs πŸ₯°
