Ironman African Championship 2023 – Race Report

This past Sunday I finished Ironman African Championship. It was supposed to be a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle, and 42km run. Instead, it ended up being a 800m swim, 180km cycle, and 42km run. As we were on the beach…

I will be racing at the Ironman African Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay on 5 March 2023. A 3.8km swim, 180km bike, and 42km run. I haven’t really been screaming it from the rooftops. I haven’t said it explicitly on…

    Ironman 70.3 Dubai 2022 – Race Report

It’s been just under a month since I’ve raced Ironman 70.3 in Dubai on 5 March 2022, and I think I’ve recovered enough to be able to write a fairly objective race report. The race was a roller coaster of…

Behold the Stockholm Tunnelbana! These art insta Behold the Stockholm Tunnelbana!

These art installations are all part of the Stockholm Metro (Tunnelbana or T-bana). The city has a rule that 2% of funding of public construction projects have to be allocated to art, so over the last 75 years, local artists have been commisioned to decorate the stations. Since most of the stations are underground, carved out of the bedrock, and can become dark and gloomy, especially in the cold winter months, the art serves to cheer up the stations and bring a sense of calm and happiness to commuters.

The Tunnelbana now boasts the world's largest art gallery, as the metro spand over 100km of rail line.

I have so many pictures it was hard to choose just a few to put into this post. I'll add a few more in stories (tomorrow though). As always, my stories are saved to highlight reels and can be found in that section if you've missed any.
If going to Topkapi Palace is the only reason you If going to Topkapi Palace is the only reason you visit Istanbul, it would be worth it. Originally commisioned in the 15th century by Sultan Mehmet II after he conquered Istanbul (then Constantinople), it was the residence of 26 of the Ottoman sultans, each of whom expanded the palace buildings further.

My favourite part is the religious relics room. If you are part of or at all interested in any of the Abrahamic religions, this is an absolute treasure chest... more so than the other room in the opposite corner which houses the actual treasures like diamonds and other jewels. Here are some of the items.

1 - entrance gate of the 1st courtyard of the palace
2 - some of the past keys of the kaabah
3 - the staff of Nabi Musa (Moses)
4 - Prophet Muhammad (SAW) foot imprint
5 - fragments of John the Baptist's arm and skullbone
6 - Prophet Dawud's sword (David)
7 - Prophet Muhammad's beard hair (magnified)
8 - letters from Muhammad to various world leaders
9 - sandals of Muhammad
10 - bottle fragments from the ghusl (ritual bath) water of Muhammad
11 - Muhammad's bow, swords and sheaths (handles and sheaths - Ottoman)
12 - coat that belonged to Fatima (daughter of Muhammad)
13 - swords of Sahaabah (companions of Prophet), sheaths - Ottoman
14 - cardigan of Muhammad (inside box)
15 - Ali (RA) turbans
16 - kaabah key and pouch
17 - Prophet's sandal (box - Ottoman)
18 - seal of Prophet (magnified)

These are just some of the hundreds of artefacts just in that section. We did have permission to take pictures. I think it used to be forbidden but is not any longer.

That was the message to me from (or through) "the book" after TRE group this morning. I cried. Because it's 100% what I needed to hear in this exact moment. And I'm only sharing it here because maybe someone reading this needs to hear it too.

Thanks @zayyan_fakier for creating a truly safe space where we can heal, each alone but also each together ❤️

5x5km relay at CT Festival of Running was fun. What a STUNNER of a winter's day to do a run. It's our fun running era and I'm so here for it 🙌🏽

Thanks @fadeelahk for arranging for us to have a team and all the logistics. Well done @nazier_isaacs for your fastest 5km in 2 years. Congrats @fred_abdee for your 1st postpartum race. And thanks @ab1kennobi for running blazing fast and bringing up our team's average speed 😊

Also special thanks to @free_2b_free @rushda.petersen @ameeradhikari for childcare duties while your spouses ran 🤗
INSTANT POT YOGHURT RECIPE After sharing my IP yo INSTANT POT YOGHURT RECIPE

After sharing my IP yoghurt this morning I got loads of requests for the recipe. So here it is. You will require 2 ingredients & press one button. Yields approx 1kg yoghurt. Process is for Duo. For Duo Crisp, go to pinned comment.

INGREDIENTS
- 1 litre full cream UHT milk (long life milk)
- 2 Tbsp plain yoghurt with live cultures (your starter)

The secret to this method is in the UHT milk. Because it has already been processed at a very high temperature, you don't need to do the whole heating and cooling process, and you don't need a thermometer.

METHOD
1) Rinse your inner pot well with boiling water (to sterilise).
2) Mix the starter into a cup of milk until it is smooth with no lumps.
3) Add this mix to inner pot along with the rest of the milk.
4) Cover with glass lid or a plate just bigger than your pot, with a dishcloth or towel under the lid.
5) Press yoghurt button and set it for 8hrs (it will default to this)
6) Wait 8hrs
7) Test by shaking the inner pot slightly (it should jiggle or be solid) or inserting a teaspoon and see if it has right consistency. If it's too runny, let it go for another hour and repeat step 7
8) Take inner pot, with lid and dishcloth and place in fridge overnight or at least a few hours. It will thicken further
9) Decant into jars and store in fridge
Keep 2 Tbsp aside to use as your next starter

NOTES
- The quality of your yoghurt will depend on the quality of your starter. I only ever buy Woolies yoghurt because theirs have live cultures & no added preservatives. Preservatives kill the cultures, so if it says live cultures and also has preservatives, you aren't getting much of the good gut stuff, which is also what your milk needs to incubate well. I used Woolies double cream yoghurt, it's what I had at home
- The dishcloth under the lid is so that the condensation that builds up on the lid doesn't drip into your yoghurt
- Don't stir or disturb the mixture while it is incubating. The cultures want to be left alone undisturbed
- You can use skim or low fat milk also (but seriously...WHY?)
- You can also just use one unit of those 6-pack small yoghurts as starter

Happy yoghurt making!

Swimming, Biking, and Running into the Ironman Sou Swimming, Biking, and Running into the Ironman South Africa weekend? Is it your first time and and are you terrified about what to expect?

Here's 10 tips to help get you through, based on my experience of 2 x IM 70.3 and 2 x full IM races under my belt.

Head on over to the link in my bio, where I cover the following:
1 - The swim start takes a long time
2 - Self-seed appropriately
3 - Know the rules
4 - Pee in your wetsuit
5 - Have a nutrition & race plan
6 - Special needs
7 - Your greatest asset: a calm mind
8 - Transition
9 - Nothing new on race day: Test everything!
10- The finish

And always remember...the most important thing is to enjoy the race. You do this for fun and you chose to do it, so have a blast out there! All the work is done in training, and race day is about the celebration.

The work has been done. Only the celebration remains.

Once upon a time... A long time ago (a little ove Once upon a time...

A long time ago (a little over a decade ago) we used to run races with the Palestine flag, along with a few other individuals who did the same. At every race we were harassed by race officials to stop doing it, and eventually we were disqualified from races for continuing (incl. at Two Oceans). We deemed it unconstitutional, since nobody else had been DQ'd for running with any other national flag. So we took WPA and Two Oceans to the SA Human Rights Commission for discrimination, as individuals, amongst a sea of backlash from giant athletics bodies. Many thought we would fail. We didn't. It was ruled that runners cannot be disqualified for running with national flags, and all DQ's were overturned.

Fast forward a few years and ASA creates rule 24.20.4 to counter this, making it illegal to run with flags with poles due to "safety concerns".

Ok. You try to stop us by making it about the pole? We'll drop the pole. But we WILL raise the flag!

PSA: I've found the secret to crispy airfried swee PSA: I've found the secret to crispy airfried sweet potato chips 😋

Because don't you hate the fact that it's always soft on the outside and never as good as the deep fried version?

Well now it can be.

After you massage it with olive oil (chips must be completely dry for this), toss with garlic powder before popping it into the airfyer. You can thank me later 😉

Don't slice them too thick.
No need to peel them, just scrub the skins before slicing.

SO delicious 🤤
